michael sonnabend Michael Sonnabend joined AFC in 1997, and is one of the senior partners of the firm. Since beginning his career in 1986, Michael Sonnabend has completed over $3 billion in financing and sale transactions nationwide. Property types have included office, retail, industrial, multifamily and hotels. At AFC in 1997 he has completed transactions valued in excess of $1 billion. Recent transactions have included construction, permanent, interim and equity financing for hotels with over 6,000 rooms, as well as office, retail and multifamily properties. Clients include both domestic and foreign private investors as well as opportunity funds, pension fund advisors and public company. Through his varied experiences, he is able to assist AFC clients in determining the most advantageous capital structure and then provide superior execution through AFC’s extensive network of capital sources.

Prior to joining AFC, Mr. Sonnabend served as Senior Vice-President of Bender & Company, a real estate services firm focusing on representation of institutional investors. At Bender, he directed the firm’s investment sales and acquisition activities. Clients included major financial institutions, such as MetLife, New York Life, Bank of New York, Prudential and CalPERS.

In 1989, Mr. Sonnabend joined The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where he was involved with financing, sales, acquisitions, workouts, and asset management activities throughout the Northeast, with a concentration on the Washington DC to New York corridor. His accomplishments at MetLife include transactions valued in excess of $1 billion consisting of mortgage financing, sales/acquisitions, and partnership workouts. Notable transactions included the $165 million financing of the Franklin Mills Mall in Philadelphia, PA.

Mr. Sonnabend began his career at Citicorp where he was involved in the company’s worldwide investment banking activities.

Mr. Sonnabend holds an MBA with a concentration in Real Estate and Finance from the University of Michigan and a BBA from George Washington University.
